The video below connects technology to what students need to know and do when they leave public education. It's interesting in that it is not simply about preparing a student to be a worker. The technology educators and leaders in this video discuss creativity, critical thinking, and technology's role supporting civic engagement. In addition, this video acknowledges what many teachers have long known--that our students are consumers of technology, immersed in technology, but they are not necessarily literate in technology. That's our job.
The digital inventory
TGC Fellows were asked to inventory their own educational environment. This was done in order to identify strengths and weaknesses in that technology is a crucial element to education and the future.
A few tools that are popular to teachers at my school:
Smore.com -- This is an easy to use digital media site. It is used mostly as an ongoing collection of course work with text, images, events, video, and audio. We use the finished product as a course reflection at the end of the semester.
Kahoot -- Many science, math, and social studies teachers use this for interactive formative assessments.
Story Boards and Comics -- This is a new find. It does charge a subscription, but it offers a 14 day trial, and you may cancel any time. This is an excellent site to create storyboards with multiple panels and creative options. Teachers can set up classes with assignments for students.
Edutopia -- This site is an substantial resource for teachers and our industry. Topics range from assessment to project based learning to classroom management and beyond.
The Teaching Channel -- Search thousands of lesson ideas by grade level and discipline. Videos are short yet comprehensive.
